Hosted in Sydney, the New South Wales organising committee did an excellent job, including a website (www.goldcup98.asn.au) with results in real time and statistics of matches, as well as games being replayed on free to air tv through the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission).

France's preliminary round pool included the Netherlands, USA, Japan, Great Britain and Korea. The French team started badly against the Netherlands with the final score being 68 - 41 to the Netherlands. On Saturday 24 the USA dominated the game and won 68 - 47. Our team had great difficulty getting into this game. Frédéric Guyot was the best shooter with 16 points.

Any chance of a medal for France and the results needed to be reversed. On Sunday, Japan bailed us out with a score of 69 - 47 in favour of our guys. Frédéric Guyot confirmed his talent of best shooter with 24 points. Cocoricoooo!!! Unfortunately the next day saw an 8 point loss to Great Britain which compromised our chances of reaching the quarter finals (48 - 40). But on Tuesday 27 our team began to shoot well and equalised the best score of the tournament by beating Korea 84 - 40. Our team gets a spot in the quarter finals.

Canada stopped France going any further winning 68 - 50. France now has two classification games. Thursday 29 our guys are easily beaten by Spain. In the first 15 minutes of the game, France could only score 1 point to Spains 27. The final score was 43 - 62!. The following day, thanks to a 3pt basket with 8 seconds to go from Lionel Dixneuf, France took 7th place in teh Championship by beating Finland 63 - 60!
